totally awesome 80’s party. share your costumes with me!
So sad but it seems to be a trend…watching the bands I love grow up and grow apart. Good luck to all those amazing guys.I’m having a hard time starting this. I could say something like “pride comes before the fall”, or “the skill in attending a party is knowing when to leave”. Rather, I’m going to just come out and be honest. The September show in New York was the last show for The Academy Is. While this is a very…

Amazing!!

no offense to those quoting the great MLK Jr, but today is about more than simply celebrating the death of one man. In the grand scheme of things, one man is insignificant and focuses too much attention on a human being who does not deserve it.
I hate getting on my soap box, but this is something I feel very strongly about. Perhaps it’s because I’ve been to more military funerals than I can count and shed tears at every single one of them. Or because I’ve sat up for almost 4 days straight while one of my two brothers in Afghanistan was MIA. Maybe it’s because I’ve sat with the mother of a dear friend for the past 10 years, celebrating birthday’s or holiday’s of a daughter who never made it safely off a plane she boarded on 9/11/2001
While I may not go out in the streets and party, I will celebrate unashamed. I will celebrate for the thousands of victims who can now hopefully, rest in peace. I will celebrate for the thousands of families & friends of those victims that may now have a sense of closure and justice for those they’ve lost. I will celebrate for all of our service men and women who did not have a choice in the matter, but sacrificed so much to accomplish the goal of bringing a murderer to justice. If ever there was a case that I would support capital punishment, this is one.
So yes, I will celebrate today and celebrate the right and freedom to do so. I will celebrate the hope that my children and their children can live in a world that may be even a little bit more peaceful than the world I live in today.
Time to do a review I’ve been waiting to write for years. That’s right, ladies and gents, it’s time to review the new My Chemical Romance album, Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys.
Admitting that as soon as the voice of Dr. Death Defying came over my speakers during “Look Alive, Sunshine”, the excitement in me bubbled up, I will try to keep this from being overly fan-girlish, but I make no promises.
Listening to the record for the third time at the moment, I’m not lying when I say I danced my way through the first few listens. It’s an album I will be playing non-stop over the next few months.
With the first single and second track, “Na Na Na” kick starting the obvious metamorphis this band has made since it’s previous release, it’s clear that listeners should be strapped in for a roller coaster ride.
The party continues with songs like “Party Poison”, “Save Yourself, I’ll Hold Them Back” and “The Only Hope For Me, Is You”, the latter showing off some of the most amazing vocals I’ve heard from Gerard since I began following this band. It’s captivating, heartfelt, emotional, and a great love song encompassed in head-bopping rhythm. I’m also anxious to see how the crazed crowds take on “Sing”, with it’s unmistakable and undeniable rock anthem chorus. The thought of mass amounts of fans chanting, ‘Sing it for the boys, sing it for the girls…Sing it for the world… Sing it out for the one’s that’ll hat your guts’ is an exciting thing to think about.
As a fan of the cult classic, “The Warriors”, the update from Dr. Death Defying was a nice touch to keep the listener engaged with “Jet Star and The Kobra Kid/Traffic Report”. Sitting alone in my room, it almost felt like a real transmission and if I looked out my window, I’d see the 2019 landscape of this post apocalyptic world. The ‘Dr.’ makes an other appearance to sign off in “Goodnite, Dr. Death”, complete with the playing of the US national anthem. It’s an ode to simpler days when networks signed off the air to the familiar tune, contrasting past, present, and future times. For those listening from other countries, the irony of including this song may fall a bit flat.
There are a few stops along the way, allowing you to catch your breath and pull the lighter out. The beginning of “Bulletproof Heart” is a short breather, the beginning just calm enough to slow your heart rate down before taking off to a boom of blazing guitars, keys, and a synth that is present in most tracks. “S/C/A/R/E/C/R/O/W” and “The Kids From Yesterday” are also a bit of a break from the quick riffs, thrumming bass, and hip shaking music though they are by no means, any less enjoyable than the rest of the album. Is that an acoustic guitar you spot? Why yes, it is. I personally love the lyrics from the latter that ring true by saying, ‘You only hear the music when your heart begins to break’. From a band that has constantlly struck a personal chord with their fans, it’s a valid and great point to make that music perhaps is at it’s most meaningful, when other things in your life make it hard to appreciate much else. Perhaps the most touching of these songs is “Summertime”. The poignant and tender lyrics, ‘You can run away with me…anytime you want’, would not be out of place on a mix cd made with hearts scribbled on top.
Those looking for the rock edge, look no further than “DESTROYA”. It’s got the attitude and growl that faithful My Chem fans may be looking for, though it still maintains the evolution the band illustrates in the the other 14 tracks of this album. With lyrics like, ‘They don’t believe in God, I don’t believe in love. They don’t believe in us, but I believe in the enemy’ the call-to-arms is made.
As a more serious point, over the past few years, times have been tough all over the world. This album captures the fact that yes, life does suck. With shit 9 to 5 jobs, bills piling up, and personal problems that accumulate in one’s life, there’s justification in putting your middle finger in the air and fighting it. The optimistic attitude and ‘fuck yeah, i’m a fighter’ message struck a chord that literally left me in tears, as some of the toughest times in my life have hit me hard over the past year. This mind set is not portrayed any better than on my personal favorite track, “Planetary (Go!)”. With a beat that reminds me of “When Worlds Collide” by Powerman 5000, complete with the growled out verses and a bit more synth sound, the tune is just as energetic and catchy as it was in 1999. I just want to sing this song 24 hours a day with epic lyrics such as, ‘I can’t stop now because I’m dancing’, and ‘I’m unbelivable, yeah. I’m undefeatable, yeah. Let’s ruin everything, blast it to the back row’.
Ending on a high note, “Vampire Money” completes the journey through an incredible array of songs. With shout outs to each band member and the tongue-in-cheek lyrics that Gerard is known for, they’re no better captured than with the following, ‘3-2-1. We came to fuck’. The guitar solo is soaring and the vocals on point to complete an album that is amazing start to finish.
Suffice to say, it seems that My Chem has done it again, putting out an album that while at first listen may not be what you’re expecting, it is in fact exactly what you need. I can’t imagine what it will be like to experience these tunes live, but I can’t wait.
Favorite Song: “Planetary (Go!)” or “The Only Hope For Me, Is You”
Least Favorite: This was hard to list, but in the end I have to say, “Save Yourself, I’ll Hold Them Back”. Mind you, this is only because I promised myself I would list a song in this category.
